    Sign Language & the Deaf Community:
    An Introduction
    In this course you will be introduced to Australian Sign Language (Auslan) and practice expressing visual communication - including facial and body movements. You will also go through some expressions familiar to Auslan - including index finger signs, describing people and shapes, indicating possession and time, and practice finger spelling the Australian alphabet. Discover the language used by members of the Deaf Community and find out how this differs from Signed English. A background will be given on Deafness in education and highlights some contemporary issues and services provided to the Deaf Community. A prerequisite for Auslan I. Concession fee $82.

    This subject challenges you to think and communicate in a visual and physical language. Through using sign language as a method of greeting people, Auslan 1 explores the use of facial and body expressions to guide the tone of everyday conversations.
